Amsterdam in 4 days, beyond the canal photo.

Amsterdam is easy to get around and easy to over-plan. The big museums run on timed tickets, the markets keep their own days, and Haarlem is closer than most people think. A good plan fits these together.

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1 · Arrive and walk the JordaanThe train from Schiphol to Centraal takes about 17 minutes; check in and out at the gates. Then the Jordaan’s lanes, a brown café like Papeneiland, and apple pie at Winkel 43.
  2. Day 2 · The big museumsThe Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum both sell timed tickets; the Van Gogh is online only. In the Rijksmuseum, look down into the Cuypers Library from the gallery balcony, which is included in the ticket.
  3. Day 3 · Markets and quiet cornersThe Noordermarkt (organic on Saturdays, a general market plus the Westerstraat textile market on Mondays), the Albert Cuyp market (closed Sundays), the Nine Streets and the hidden Begijnhof. On Wednesdays the Concertgebouw has a free lunchtime concert with a free ticket.
  4. Day 4 · HaarlemAbout 15 minutes by Intercity. The Frans Hals Museum (closed Mondays) and the Grote Markt make an easy, unhurried day.
