Trip plan · Evia
Evia in a week, north or south, not both in a rush.
Evia is Greece’s second-largest island and it’s long: Chalkida to Karystos is about three hours by car. A good week picks a half, or splits the stay in two, instead of spending it on the road.

The plan, day by day
- Days 1–2 · Chalkida and EretriaAt the old bridge over the Euripus, the current changes direction about every six hours, and on some days up to 14 times. The Eretria Archaeological Museum, home of the Lefkandi centaur, is usually closed on Tuesdays.
- Day 3 · Into the mountainsSteni village and Dirfys, the island’s highest peak at 1,743 m. From the refuge it’s a walk of more than five hours, and the weather changes fast.
- Days 4–5 · The northThe olive estate at Rovies has its own mill and a tasting room. Add the Drymonas waterfalls and the fig co-op in Istiaia, whose sun-dried figs have PDO status. At Loutra Edipsou, more than 80 hot springs rise, and some run straight into the sea, where you can bathe for free.
- Days 6–7 · The southFrom the Kastanologos chestnut forest above Karystos, a climb of 1 to 1½ hours leads to the “Dragon House” on Mount Ochi; carry water. The Dimosaris gorge is about 10 km and 5 hours one-way, so arrange transport back, and a guide is recommended.
Worth knowing
- The ferry from Marmari to Rafina connects the south to Athens and the sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron.
- Kymi, on the east coast, is the birthplace of Georgios Papanikolaou, who gave the Pap test its name. It has a small folklore museum.
- In low season, many tavernas close one day a week. Check before you drive.
