Trip plan · Paris
Paris in 5 days, without the museum marathon.
Most Paris plans try to fit the Louvre, the Orsay and Versailles into three days. A better plan picks one big thing a day, uses the days when each museum is closed, and leaves the evenings free.

The plan, day by day
- Day 1 · Settle inPick a base with good metro links (the 9th works well). Walk the covered passages, take in the free view from the Galeries Lafayette rooftop, and have dinner at Bouillon Chartier: no reservations, so expect a queue.
- Day 2 · One big museumThe Louvre is closed on Tuesdays and the Orsay on Mondays, so a good plan puts each on the right day. Pick one window of the Louvre rather than a whole day. The Orsay stays open late on Thursdays.
- Day 3 · The smaller museumsThe Musée de la Vie Romantique (its permanent collection is free, with a tea room in the greenhouse), the Gustave Moreau studio, and the Jacquemart-André mansion. Quieter, and closer to the real city.
- Day 4 · Versailles or ChantillyVersailles is about 40 minutes on Line L from Saint-Lazare, plus a walk of about 20 minutes, and it is closed on Mondays. Chantilly is about 25 minutes by regional train from Gare du Nord and is closed on Tuesdays.
- Day 5 · Or two nights in ColmarIn December, Colmar’s Christmas markets and Petite Venise are worth trading Versailles for. Eguisheim is an easy village day if you have time.
Worth knowing
- Monet’s garden at Giverny is open only from April to the start of November, so it’s a spring or summer plan.
- Taxis from the Paris airports charge a fixed fare to the city, set by law.
- The Roissybus airport bus stopped running in early 2026. Older guides still list it.
