Trip plan · Vienna

Vienna in 5 days, at a gentle pace.

Vienna rewards slow days: a coffee house in the afternoon, one museum, a market at dusk. A good plan spreads the big sights out and keeps one day for the hills or a short trip out of town.

  2. Day 2 · SchönbrunnCome to the palace’s Christmas market at opening time, while it’s quiet, then climb to the Gloriette for the view.
  3. Day 3 · Klimt and the late museumsSee The Kiss at the Belvedere and stay for the gardens at sunset. The Albertina stays open late on Wednesdays and Fridays.
  4. Day 4 · Heiligenstadt and the hillsKarl-Marx-Hof, the kilometre-long icon of “Red Vienna” housing. Then bus 38A up to the Kahlenberg, and a Heuriger evening at Mayer am Pfarrplatz, in the house where Beethoven lived in 1817.
  5. Day 5 · Out of townKlosterneuburg Abbey is about 15 minutes away on the S40. Melk Abbey makes a longer day out. Baden’s Römertherme, thermal water under a glass roof, is about an hour away on the Badner Bahn.
